CourseControl is designed to serve you as a travel plan that shows you what your individual long-term (life) goals are and where you are located on each leg of the journey.

The operating principle

Basically CourseControl is about offering you the best possible support for achieving your long-term goals. CourseControl offers you the opportunity to pursue long-term goals effectively and to maximize the chances of succeeding in their achievement. To achieve this we need to define, plan and control our goals.

CourseControl uses for this purpose the following methods:

The goal commitment

It is important to write down your goals. Only after writing it down will one commit to a goal and approach it as such. This commitment to a goal is important in order to raise goals from an abstract, intangible level to a tangible level. Once you commit to a goal, the subconscious mind begins to work towards its achievement and to produce ideas that will help you achieve the goal.

The Dominican University of California conducted a study about the difference between writing down a goal and planning it only mentally. This study shows that writing down goals significantly increases the probability of successfully achieving them.

You may have heard about similar, highly cited studies from Harvard and Yale, which showed that the 3% of the students who had written down their objectives were earning 10 times as much as the students who did not, after 20 years.

Well, it seems that these studies were no more than myths. However, the study of the Dominican University was actually conducted.

The 'Begin with the End in Mind' method

Life goals are easily identified with the 'Begin with the End in Mind' method that Stephen Covey presents in his book 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People'.

Using the 'Begin with the End in Mind' method you can imagine your own funeral. Imagine there are several speakers, one for each part of ‚Äč‚Äčlife (for example, family, friends, society, work, ...). Each of these speakers gives a short speech. The task now consists in sitting down and writing down these speeches on a piece of paper. By writing down the words we can truly understand how we wish to be seen by other people and thereby we also learn about the direction in which we should direct our own lives to come as close as possible to the statements of the individual speeches.

This exercise is very useful for making visible our own life goals, of which otherwise we are often not aware.

The goals found through this exercise are then to be entered in CourseControl, so that they never get out of sight.

If possible, dedicate some time now to do this exercise. Please bear in mind that the likelihood of performing a task decreases with each postponement. You will surely also learn some lessons about your own life which apply to these goals. For this reason, it is important that you begin this exercise right now, or at least set a firm date for it immediately.

The bucket list

The term 'bucket list' stems from the film 'The Bucket List'   with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. In this film the actors write a list of things that they want to do before they 'kick the bucket'.

After dealing in the last section with what kind of legacy we want to leave behind after we die, we come to the bucket list which is concerned purely with living life. In order to find goals with the bucket list method, we ask ourselves the following questions:

  • What do you want to do before you die?
  • What would you do if nothing were impossible?
  • What would be your goals if you were the smartest person in the world and you could achieve everything that you want?

Maybe you dream of seeing every country in the world within your lifetime. Or you want to found a company and become your own boss. Maybe you want to become a famous actor or best-selling author.

You should now make a note of such goals.

And don't feel inhibited, even egotism is okay at this point. If you, for example, dream of becoming the richest person in the world, then you should note down this goal. It is not important at this point if the goal seems realistic to you. Simply write down everything that you would like to do or achieve some day. Maybe you will never achieve one or another goal, but what if you did? Also it is certainly worth it in many cases just to get a little bit closer to a goal.

What do you want to do before you die?

The dream goal gathering

The really desirable objectives are usually those which one doesn't believe in fulfilling, because they seem so far away (in this context one also calls them dreams). Since they believe that it is impossible to achieve such goals, most people do not even start working on their achievement. That is a real shame, because precisely these goals are the ones that bring out the greatest energy potential from us, since we see them as highly desirable.

For example:
If the reward was a dreamlike Caribbean trip, I would be willing to participate in a marathon. However, for a free walking tour in Munich, I would not even get up from my sofa.

The previous example shows that a person is willing to make great efforts, if the reward at the end is something that he/she finds very desirable. Small goals, on the other hand, hold little or no energy potential in them. Precisely for this reason one should especially give a chance to the dreamed goals.

However, in order to include these goals in the planning, you have to make a greater effort. The problem with such goals is that they are very loosely floating around in our head and we almost never really think carefully about them. A typical train of thought about such goals often looks like this: 'Yes, a whole year trip around the world would be great. Unfortunately, I will never be able to afford it'. This way the thought is ended and it is pushed aside.

To be able to still include those objectives, it has been proven useful to pursue an amount of at least 100 goals. This way you are forced to deal extensively with your goals. To gather 100 goals for the first time is not easy, but fortunately this task must only be completed once. At best, you should dedicate a whole day to this task, making a note of anything that appears desirable to you. Not all goals have to actually be 'dream goals'. In this process, it is perfectly acceptable to write down the long-awaited parachute jump or other similar goals. Nevertheless, the 100 goals still allow for some 'dream goals' to land on the list.

Reminder:
Everything that is on the list must be specific and predictable. So it's best to begin immediately collecting the first goals, and if you don't have enough time for it today at least set a date right now. As previously mentioned, once you have postponed a task for the first time it becomes less likely to start it at all.

The appraisal

Finally, let's have a look at the appraisal. The appraisal is due at least once a year and it is used to control your own success and to put things back on track. The appraisal should also show your personal development since the last appraisal.

When doing the appraisal it is necessary to go through all long-term goals. Achieved goals are recorded as a success, marked as 'done' and removed from the list. No longer relevant goals are also removed. In the remaining objectives the progress will be monitored and the next steps in the right direction will be planned.

Then the process starts over. This time, however, with the difference that the 100 goals don't have to be completely redefined but only brought back to a number of at least 100.
